Panel discussion Imposter Syndrome

Milio van de Kamp (he/him): “When I got my master’s, the first thing I did when I ran away is I said to my friend, ‘OK we have to make sure they can’t take this away. We have to run away from college and never look back. They can’t physically take this out of my hands anymore because I was expecting someone to come and say, ‘oh wait a minute, we made a mistake.'”

Last week we had a panel discussion on Imposter Syndrome led by Chahida Bouhamou, MSc. on behalf of UP-Community; a community for first-generation college students. Want to learn more about the experiences of first-generation college students? Milio’s book 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘦𝘵 𝘫𝘦 𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘬𝘬𝘦𝘯 is on sale in bookstores starting this week. Another tip from Milio:

“If you have the papers that admit you to college, whatever route you took to get here, you are very capable of getting your degree. Even if you fail half the courses in your first year and experience a lot of stress. A lot of people have gone through it. I’ve experienced it. I failed some of my first-year courses because I still had to adjust to the way the university works. Especially as a first-generation student.”

"As a first generation student, Judith had a hard time adjusting to the pace of studying at University. Besides, due to external factors such as having to take care of her father resulted in finishing her studies not as quickly as she had expected."
